Banda Na Rua originally formed 2013 as Honley Samba Band. Starting with six members and now averaging twenty to thirty the band has grown in reputation, with beginners now traveling from across Kirklees to learn drumming in Honley. We give around a dozen performances a year, which range from carnivals to sports events, festivals to club nights.
Fall in love with drumming
This friendly percussion group wants to hear from those aged 10-110 who would like to pick up a Brazilian-style drum. Musical experience not necessary, just a willingness to throw yourself in work hard. Weekly rehearsals are held Fridays 7.30-9.30 at Neiley Pavillion, New Mill Road, Honley, HD9 6QE and are open to all adults and accompanied young people aged 10+.

The leader
The rehearsals are led by professional community drummer Katie Mallard from Rhythm Stick Drumming - www.rhythmstick.co.uk . After joining Arco Iris, the Cambridge Community Samba Band whilst at university Katie quickly developed a passion for Brazilian beats and began to lead bands including Fruity Clave and Ely Community Samba Band. After leading drum workshops for 16 years Katie has developed teaching style that is energetic and compassionate, allowing participants to develop their skills in a supportive environment yet really let themselves go to enjoy the rhythms. Not free on a Friday evening? Contact Katie about other groups.

about our music
We use traditional Samba style instruments ranging from small agogo bells and shakers to large surdo bass drums. A traditional Samba rhythm originates from Rio De Janeiro but at Banda Na Rua we excel in making pounding rhythms that fuse together traditional rhythms from all over Brazil with modern British styles.
Making music as a group is not only exciting but is a workout for body and mind. The best way to end the week. |
