Banda Na Rua originally formed 2013 as Honley Samba Band. Starting with 6 members and now averaging 35 the band has grown in reputation, with beginners now traveling from across Kirklees and beyond to learn percussion in Honley.
We give around a dozen performances a year, which range from carnivals to sports events, festivals to club nights.

WHO CAN TRY OUT BANDA?
Free trials are open to anyone who wants to throw themselves into the wonderful world of drums and percussion. Percussion experience is not necessary for all of our instruments, just an ability to get stuck in.
If during your trial session you are: - confident at copying our simpler rhythms - excited to learn our more complex rhythms - energetic enough to play for 1.5 hours Then you might just have found a fantastic new, weekly hobby! |
Also check out our director's other band Valley Beats Samba Band who meet Wednesday and Thursday mornings and are open to adults of all abilities.
The leader
The rehearsals are led by enthusiastic band leader Katie Mallard from Rhythm Stick Drumming - www.rhythmstick.co.uk . This feisty Community Percussionist has been leading drum workshops for 18 years and has a teaching style that is energetic and compassionate, allowing participants to really develop their skills and let themselves go into the hypnotic rhythms.
Not free on a Friday evening? Contact Katie about other groups. |
about our music and the instruments
We use traditional Samba style instruments ranging from small agogo bells and shakers to large surdo bass drums. Traditional Samba rhythms originate from Rio De Janeiro but at Banda Na Rua we excel in making pounding rhythms that fuse together rhythms from all over Brazil with modern British styles.
Making music as a group is not only exciting but is a workout for body and mind. The best way to end the week. |
Procedures to keep everybody safe
All adult band members must read and agree to abide by the below two documents to which help to keep all of our members happy and safe. You can also see how to make a band safeguarding referral below and our Designated Safeguarding Lead is Katie Mallard - 07736 049089.
