Banda Na Rua originally formed 2013 as Honley Samba Band. Starting with 6 members and now averaging 25 the band has grown in reputation, with beginners now traveling from across Kirklees and beyond to learn drumming in Honley.
We give around a dozen performances a year, which range from carnivals to sports events, festivals to club nights.

Fall in love with drumming
Get addicted to thumping rhythms, fast pace and sheer exhilaration of playing with a mass of drummers. We want to hear from anyone who wants to muck in and throw themselves into the wonderful world pf drumming. Percussion experience not necessary, just a willingness to work hard. Weekly rehearsals are held Fridays 7.30-9.30 at Neiley Pavillion, New Mill Road, Honley, HD9 6QE and are open to all adults and accompanied young people aged 10+.

The leader
The rehearsals are led by enthusiastic band leader Katie Mallard from Rhythm Stick Drumming - www.rhythmstick.co.uk . This feisty Community Percussionist has been leading drum workshops for 16 years and has a teaching style that is energetic and compassionate, allowing participants to really develop their skills and let themselves go into the hypnotic rhythms.
Not free on a Friday evening? Contact Katie about other groups. |
about our music and the instruments
We use traditional Samba style instruments ranging from small agogo bells and shakers to large surdo bass drums. A traditional Samba rhythm originates from Rio De Janeiro but at Banda Na Rua we excel in making pounding rhythms that fuse together traditional rhythms from all over Brazil with modern British styles.
Making music as a group is not only exciting but is a workout for body and mind. The best way to end the week. |
